I TOOK A PILL IN IBIZA: Mike Posner (Seeb Remix)

While I’m sure this song has grown in popularity in clubs, bars, and on your local radio station, it has also managed to stay course and be popular with myself. There is just something to the thrummed synthetic sound that makes me not only move but listen.

Mike Posner put out the original I Took a Pill in Ibiza on his “At Night, Alone” album and the remix was released by the Norwegian duo Seeb. If you take a listen to the original you’ll find a slower, acoustic melody compared to the swifter, layered remix. While there is not nearly as much power in the original’s sound (I actually find it a little stiff on the musicality side), what will stick out is the true weight in the lyrics (which don’t really shine through on the remix).

I think when most people first listen to the remix, they here the first few lines, cap if for a party song and don’t bother to hear what else Posner is saying. In the chorus, he endlessly repeats the phrases “You don’t wanna” followed by an action in his life. He implies that all the success he has had has actually made him feel low and sad. He doesn’t know who to trust and feels alone. When he is performing, he is “stuck” doing the act. Imagine the one thing that kept your life going—your dreams—is now something you are stuck in? With all that downward emotion playing on his life every day, he is left with only “sad songs.”

This is even more emphasized in the verses. He does things for others “just to prove” himself. He can’t have a relationship because “the truth is he can’t open up.” He already “blew his shot” and in the last verse (which Seeb actually left out likely because it can’t be masked with the club-like scene) he returns home to a world that thinks a lot of him. But when he is asked by others how to get to such a high spot in fame, he feeds them the chorus.

When this song is broken down, you realize that Posner is pouring out his failures, fears, and disappointments within his own popularized life (kind of strange to dance to now?). While I really enjoy Seebs’ color and texture that they bring to the remix, it is Posner’s lyrics that really make it a good song. All the heavy realizations that he empties out in this one is a hard pill to swallow.

Enjoy!

“I Took a Pill in Ibiza” by Mike Posner (Seeb Remix omits last verse)

I took a pill in Ibiza
To show Avicii I was cool
And when I finally got sober, felt 10 years older
But fuck it, it was something to do
I’m living out in LA
I drive a sports car just to prove
I’m a real big baller ’cause I made a million dollars
And I spend it on girls and shoes

But you don’t wanna be high like me
Never really knowing why like me
You don’t ever wanna step off that roller coaster and be all alone
You don’t wanna ride the bus like this
Never knowing who to trust like this
You don’t wanna be stuck up on that stage singing
Stuck up on that stage singing
All I know are sad songs, sad songs
Darling, all I know are sad songs, sad songs

I’m just a singer who already blew his shot
I get along with old timers
‘Cause my name’s a reminder of a pop song people forgot
And I can’t keep a girl, no
‘Cause as soon as the sun comes up
I cut ’em all loose and work’s my excuse
But the truth is I can’t open up

But you don’t wanna be high like me
Never really knowing why like me
You don’t ever wanna step off that roller coaster and be all alone
You don’t wanna ride the bus like this
Never knowing who to trust like this
You don’t wanna be stuck up on that stage singing
Stuck up on that stage singing
All I know are sad songs, sad songs
Darling, all I know are sad songs, sad songs

I took a plane to my home town
I brought my pride and my guitar
All my friends are all gone but there’s manicured lawns
And the people still think I’m a star
I walked around downtown
I met some fans on Lafayette
They said tell us how to make it ’cause we’re getting real impatient
So I looked ’em in the eye and said

You don’t wanna be high like me
Never really knowing why like me
You don’t ever wanna step off that roller coaster and be all alone
You don’t wanna ride the bus like this
Never knowing who to trust like this
You don’t wanna be stuck up on that stage singing
Stuck up on that stage singing
All that I know are sad songs, sad songs
Darling, all that I know are sad songs, sad songs
